 What is the value chain?

In the membrane Industry, Solvay is at the beginning of the value chain. We manufacture monomers and we produce engineering polymers (plastic resins) that are used by the membrane manufacturer to produce the filtration membrane.

Our core business is to produce engineering polymers and provide service that satisfies the needs and wants of our valued customers.

This mission includes planning for the future and staying ahead of the competition by proposing innovative products designed to meet or exceed the requirements of the industry. To achieve this ambitious goal, we speak and exchange information frequently with all the players all along the value chain while respecting the confidentiality of their projects.

For example, in the water purification industry, we speak with our customers (the membrane manufacturers), their customers (the Engineering Firms, which design, build, and operate the water purification plants), and the end users (the water purification plants). This approach allow us to find out the needs and wants of all the value chain players, and to understand precisely what we have to do to develop new materials.

We also constantly monitor the activities of the regulatory agencies that define the industry requirements and procedures. We work with them as appropriate to ensure that our products conform to current and future standards and codes.

In addition, Solvay values the contributions of the scientists, students and professors working in the universities developing the membrane materials of the future. The academic community is in contact with all of the value chain players and addresses their needs and wants. We fully support this activity by technical exchanges and materials sampling, and we enjoy working with these innovative people.
