 Water filtration

 Overview

This a key market for Solvay because Sulfone polymers (UDEL® PSF polysulfone / RADEL® A PES polyethersulfone / RADEL® R PPSU polyphenylsulfone), and Fluoropolymers (SOLEF® PVDF Polyvinylidene Fluoride) have excellent properties for membrane production and use.

Sulfone polymers and PVDF are the material of choice for:

  • MICROFILTRATION Membranes (MF)
  • ULTRAFILTRATION Membranes (UF)
  • DRINKING WATER treatment (both from Surface and Ground waters)
  • WASTEWATER treatment (including the Membrane Bio-Reactor technology)

These Polymers :

  • Are easy to process with good film-forming properties
  • Give robust membranes
  • Offer very good control of the pore size and pore size distribution
  • Offer good ozone, chlorine and UV resistance under certain conditions

Overview

MicroFiltration (MF) and UltraFiltration (UF) are the "Low Pressure" membranes for water treatment, due to the fact these pressure driven membrane processes operate at low pressures.

  • MicroFiltration membranes are mainly used for:
    • Turbidity reduction.
    • Pathogen removal (Bacteria like Giardia Lamblia, Escherichia coli and Cryptosporidium).

  • UltraFiltration membranes are used for:
    • Biomolecular separation.
    • Colloidal silica removal.
    • Bacteria (like Giardia Lamblia, Escherichia coli and Cryptosporidium) and viruses removal.
